Per kilo is the wrong number.

A prebiotic that needs 10 g to work is not cheap at ₹300/kg. What matters is what one effective dose costs — and on that basis the ranking inverts completely.

XOS degradation by human digestive enzymes is reported below 0.4%. FOS and IMO can exceed 10%, so more must be dosed to deliver the same amount to the colon.

Method

cost per dose = (price per kg ÷ 1000) × dose in grams XOS parity price = (cost per dose ÷ 2.8 g) × 1000

Parity uses 2.8 g — the upper, more conservative end of the studied XOS range. At the lower end of 1.4 g the parity price would be roughly double what is shown.

The underdosing problem

Most products state less than trials used.

A low dose per serving is what makes a cheap per-kilo prebiotic look affordable. It is also why many finished products carry a fibre that never reaches the dose the research was built on — which is the whole reason cost-in-use, not price per kilo, is the number that matters.

No human-food clearance required, so qualification runs in weeks. Demand is being pushed hard by the move away from antibiotic growth promoters — most acutely in shrimp, where residue findings are actively costing exporters rejected consignments.

Functional foods, drinks and supplements. Requires FSSAI clearance domestically, and the low dose is a formulation advantage rather than merely a cost one — it fits formats bulkier fibres cannot enter.

Higher purity, tighter chain-length control, and the documentation and liability that clinical-grade consistency demands. The molecule does not change so much as the assurance around it does.

Bespoke synbiotics

The goal

The end point is not selling XOS by the tonne. It is co-developing finished synbiotic products with a pharmaceutical or nutrition partner — matching specific chain-length profiles to specific probiotic strains. That is a formulation business, not an ingredient business, and it is where the value concentrates.
