Corn Cob

Corn cob is the woody core left after maize kernels are stripped. Among the agricultural residues available at scale in India, it has the highest hemicellulose fraction — which makes it the single strongest candidate for producing xylo-oligosaccharides.

Composition in detail

On a dry-matter basis corn cob runs roughly 35–43% cellulose, 30–44% hemicellulose and 11–18% lignin, with the balance ash and extractives. The defining feature is that hemicellulose fraction: at up to 44% it can exceed the cellulose content, which is unusual among lignocellulosic residues and is the reason corn cob dominates commercial XOS production globally.

Why the xylan content matters

Hemicellulose in corn cob is predominantly xylan — a branched polymer of xylose units. Xylan is the direct precursor to xylo-oligosaccharides, the prebiotic class that is effective at roughly a fifth of the dose of inulin or FOS. A feedstock carrying a third or more of its dry weight as xylan yields materially more product per tonne processed than one carrying a quarter, and that difference compounds directly through plant economics.

Collection and logistics

Corn cob has a practical advantage that is easy to overlook: it arrives already aggregated. Cobs are separated from grain at shelling points rather than scattered across fields, so the first-mile collection problem that plagues loose straw largely disappears. Bulk density of 250–300 kg/m³ also means trucks reach weight limits rather than filling on volume, which keeps transport economics viable over a wider catchment radius.

Seasonality

Maize is grown in both Kharif and Rabi seasons across Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar. Two harvests extend the operating window for a processing facility considerably relative to single-season crops such as sugarcane — a meaningful factor for any plant that must run continuously to justify its capital.

Processing considerations

The trade-off is mechanical. Cobs are hard, dense and abrasive, and require more robust size reduction upstream — hammer milling rather than the shredding adequate for softer residues. Equipment wear is a real cost line. Against that, the low ash content relative to rice straw means downstream purification is considerably less demanding.
